Before you set out
Prerequisites#
- For the Cloud transfer, update How to Fish to Patch 1.0.12 or later.
- Start on the PC that still has the progress you want to keep.
- Check that Steam Cloud is enabled globally in Steam Settings > Cloud and for How to Fish in its Steam Properties.
Route 01
Save before leaving the game#
Use a normal save or exit#
Patch 1.0.6 lists Save, Main Menu, and Quit as actions that save the game. Use one of these before leaving rather than relying on a crash to preserve the last moment of play.
Allow for the autosave interval#
The same patch says the game autosaves every minute. That is a periodic save, so it is not a promise that every action is written immediately.
Let Steam synchronize after the game closes#
Steam Cloud copies changed files to Steam after the game exits. Leave time for the upload to complete before closing Steam or moving to another PC.
Route 02
Move an existing save to another PC#
The Patch 1.0.12 announcement says: “Play and exit How to Fish on the pc you've saved them on once to upload them to the cloud”.
Open the game on the original PC#
Use the PC that contains your existing progress for this first play-and-exit cycle. Starting on a different PC does not perform the developer’s requested upload from the original one.
Exit normally and wait for the upload#
After that session, exit the game normally and wait for Steam Cloud synchronization to finish. Steam uploads can take time; do not treat a closed game window as proof that the upload has completed.
Finish syncing before playing on the other PC#
Steam Cloud downloads the cloud files to another computer before game launch. Allow synchronization to complete before continuing there.
Fault ledger
If the save is missing or not syncing#
- The second PC does not show the expected progress
- Check the original PC first. If the wanted progress is still there, confirm the Cloud settings, then perform the original-PC play-and-exit upload required by Patch 1.0.12. Wait for synchronization before trying the other PC.
- Steam Cloud is disabled
- Check Steam Settings > Cloud and the per-game Cloud setting in How to Fish’s Steam Properties. Steam allows either setting to disable synchronization.
- Progress has already disappeared or a save will not load
- Do not assume a Cloud upload will recreate the missing progress. Avoid deleting save files or overwriting a copy that still works; ask the developer for a recovery procedure before trying manual file changes.
Caution
Corruption backups are not a confirmed restore procedure#
Patch 1.0.11 added a corruption check before loading and backups in case saves become corrupt. The announcement does not document a backup folder, a number of retained copies, or steps to restore an earlier working state. The existence of a backup does not establish that any particular lost items or progress can be recovered.
Which patch changed saving?#
Patch 1.0.6 describes autosaving every minute and saving through Save, Main Menu, and Quit; it also stopped crashes from writing a new local or server save. Patch 1.0.11 added corruption checks and backups. Patch 1.0.12 added Steam Cloud support. Advice that says the game has no Steam Cloud support predates that update.
